Stainless Steel vs Fibreglass Insect Mesh

The two common mesh materials trade off durability against cost and visibility. Here's how they compare.

Fibreglass mesh

Flexible, economical, and gives good visibility. It won't corrode, but it's softer, so it can be pushed or torn by pets or rough handling.

Stainless steel mesh

More robust and resistant to tearing, holding up well against pets and wear. It's the sturdier long-term choice, at a higher cost, and is harder to damage.

Which to choose

For most windows, fibreglass is perfectly adequate and economical. Where pets, children, or heavy use are a factor, stainless steel earns its place. Match the material to how tough the conditions are.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is stainless steel mesh better than fibreglass?

It's tougher and more tear-resistant, better where pets or heavy use are a factor. Fibreglass is lighter, economical, and fine for most windows.

Which mesh lasts longer?

Stainless steel resists tearing and wear better, so it tends to last longer in tough conditions.

Does mesh material affect the view?

Both give good visibility; fibreglass is very fine, stainless is slightly more visible but sturdier.
