A balcony sliding door does more work than almost any other opening in a Coimbatore home. It takes direct monsoon, full sun, daily traffic, and seals the living room from outside weather. When it fails — and the original builder-installed one usually does within 5-7 years — the whole room suffers. Replacing it properly is the highest-impact uPVC upgrade in most apartments.
Balcony sliders in Coimbatore are usually 6-8 feet wide, 7-8 feet tall, with a 2-panel configuration (one slides, one fixed). The work is replacement of the existing aluminium or wood frame slider with a sized-to-fit uPVC system. Measurement takes 30 minutes, manufacturing 7-10 days, installation a single working day. The threshold detail is the critical part — water needs to drain away from the room during monsoon, not into it.
" The balcony slider is where Coimbatore monsoon meets your living room. Get this one right and the room transforms.
Most failed balcony sliders we replace are leaking because the original threshold was installed wrong or has degraded. Water needs to drain outward into the balcony, not pool at the inner edge where it eventually seeps in. We design the threshold detail specifically for the monsoon — outward slope, drainage channels in the bottom track, sealant joint that's continuous along the inside edge. This is the unsexy part of the work that determines whether the door works.
Coimbatore balconies in monsoon season collect water and become mosquito habitats overnight. A sliding mesh panel on the balcony door lets you keep the door open for air without inviting in the mosquitoes. The mesh runs on its own track parallel to the main panels and slides out of the way when not needed. Adds about ₹4,000-8,000 to the door cost. Worth it for nearly every balcony slider we install.
Building code requires toughened safety glass for any door-mounted glazing — that's standard for our manufacturing. Some cheaper installers cut this corner with annealed glass to save ₹2,000-3,000 per door. Don't accept it. Annealed glass at door size breaks into sharp shards on impact; toughened glass breaks into small pieces that don't cut. The cost difference doesn't justify the safety risk.
The most common question about balcony sliders is how much clear opening you actually get. With a 2-panel slider, you get 50% of the opening clear — one panel slides over the fixed one. With a 3-panel slider, you get either 66% (two panels slide over one fixed) or 50% with both end panels sliding to the middle. If you want more than 66% open, you're looking at bifold rather than sliding. We discuss based on the opening width and how the door is used.
The second question is about whether the existing balcony floor needs any change. Usually no — the new uPVC slider fits the existing threshold and floor configuration. Where we sometimes need adjustment: if the existing threshold has degraded badly and isn't level anymore, or if you want to upgrade to a low-profile threshold for accessibility, some floor-level work is needed. We assess at measurement.
The third common concern is about the security of a sliding door. Modern uPVC sliders have anti-lift brackets and proper locking mechanisms that resist the common 'lift the panel off the track' attack on cheap aluminium sliders. We include these as standard. Where extra security is wanted, a deadbolt or window-sensor alarm can be added. Patio doors are no easier to force than a quality front door when properly built.
Balcony slider measurement takes 20-30 minutes. We measure the opening, photograph the existing setup, and discuss your preferences — mesh, glazing thickness, panel configuration.
