uPVC vs Aluminium Windows: Which Is Better?

uPVC and aluminium are the two materials most Coimbatore buyers weigh up today, and neither is simply "better" — they trade off against each other. This guide walks through how they differ on the things that actually matter day to day: heat, noise, maintenance, strength, and appearance.

Heat and insulation

uPVC is a poor conductor of heat, so it naturally resists the transfer of outdoor warmth into your rooms. Aluminium, being a metal, conducts heat readily; without a thermal break in the frame, an aluminium window can let heat pass through the frame itself. In a hot climate, this difference is felt directly in how comfortable a room stays through the afternoon.

Maintenance over the years

uPVC frames do not rust, rot, or corrode, and they never need painting — an occasional wipe is the whole routine. Aluminium does not rot either, but cheaper finishes can chalk or pit over time, especially in humid or coastal-influenced air.

Strength and slim profiles

This is where aluminium has a genuine edge. Because the metal is strong, aluminium frames can be slimmer while carrying large panes, which suits very large glazed openings and a minimalist look. uPVC profiles are bulkier for the same span, though for the great majority of home windows this is not a limiting factor.

Which to choose

For most homes prioritising comfort, quiet, and a fit-and-forget life, uPVC is the stronger all-round choice. Where the priority is the slimmest possible sightlines on very large openings, aluminium earns its place. Many homes sensibly use uPVC throughout and reserve other solutions only for exceptional spans.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is uPVC better than aluminium for a hot climate?

For heat comfort, uPVC generally performs better because it does not conduct heat the way metal does. Aluminium can match it only with a proper thermal break, which adds cost.

Do aluminium windows last longer than uPVC?

Both last many years when made well. Aluminium is structurally very strong; uPVC resists corrosion completely. Lifespan comes down more to build and hardware quality than to the material alone.

Which is more expensive?

It depends on the specification rather than the material name. We quote each job after measuring, so the honest answer is that we'll price your actual openings rather than quote a material rate.
