Common uPVC Window Problems & Fixes

uPVC windows are low-trouble, but a few minor issues can crop up over the years. Here's what they are and how they're usually resolved.

Stiff or sticking sliders

Usually caused by grit in the track. Cleaning the track restores smooth gliding. If a roller has genuinely worn, it can be replaced — the frame itself is fine.

Drafts or whistling

Generally a gasket that has shifted or aged. Reseating or replacing the gasket restores the seal. It's a small fix, not a frame problem.

Condensation and locks

Condensation between double-glazed panes means the sealed unit has failed and the glass unit needs replacing — the frame stays. Stiff handles or locks can usually be adjusted or replaced. Most issues are hardware-level, which is good news: the frame outlasts them.

Questions

Frequently asked

Why is my uPVC slider stiff?

Almost always grit in the track — cleaning it restores smooth movement. A genuinely worn roller can be replaced without touching the frame.

What causes drafts on a uPVC window?

Usually an aged or shifted gasket. Reseating or replacing it restores the seal.

Can window problems be fixed without replacing the whole window?

Usually yes — most issues are hardware or gasket level. The frame typically outlasts these and stays in place.
